LITTLE MILTON
James Milton Campbell Jr., known professionally as Little Milton, was a celebrated American blues singer and guitarist hailing from the Mississippi Delta. He launched his recording career in 1953 with Sun Records, later moving to St. Louis where he co-founded Bobbin Records in 1958. Milton’s breakthrough came after signing with Checker Records, where he finally found chart success. His most notable hit, We’re Gonna Make It, was written by Gene Barge, Billy Davis, Raynard Miner, and Carl William Smith. The song became his only Top 40 entry and his highest-charting R&B single, holding the No. 1 spot on the U.S. R&B chart for three consecutive weeks. The song’s lyrics resonated as a metaphor for the civil rights movement, reflecting the social climate of its time. In recognition of his contributions to the genre, Little Milton was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1988.
