Artistic Footing

Born Alecia Tameka Grey in the quiet town of Christiana, Jamaica, Lila Iké found her artistic footing in Kingston’s dynamic music scene after joining Protoje’s In.Digg.Nation collective in 2017. With a voice that blends soul, reggae, and raw emotion, she captivated listeners through her 7-track EP The ExPerience, released in May 2020 via In.Digg.Nation Collective/RCA Records. The ExPerience spotlighted her fearless lyrical style and earned widespread praise from reggae aficionados and global audiences alike.

Long-Awaited

Five years after captivating listeners with The ExPerience, Lila Iké returns with her long-awaited debut album Treasure Self Love, released through Ineffable Records, Protoje’s In.Digg.Nation Collective, and her own imprint, Wurl Iké Records. While albums with multiple producers often risk sounding disjointed, this one defies the odds, thanks to the steady hands of Iké, Protoje, and Jamaican producer Ziah.Push, who served as executive producers. Their oversight ensures a cohesive, well-curated sonic journey that stays true to Iké’s artistic vision from start to finish.

Blending Reggae

Blending the sound of reggae with the smooth textures of R&B and the energy of dancehall, Lila Iké’s 11-track album is a rich exploration of love in all its forms—romantic, spiritual, and self-empowering. While deeply rooted in Jamaican tradition, the album reaches outward, embracing global influences that expand its sonic landscape. Recorded at Protoje’s Habitat Studio and the legendary Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, it fuses live drums, bass, horns, and guitars from Jamaica’s top session musicians with modern production elements like synths and programmed beats from international collaborators. The result is a vibrant, fresh, contemporary reggae sound.

Successful Singles

Several tracks on Treasure Self Love will ring familiar to longtime fans and reggae enthusiasts, having already made waves as successful digital singles. Among them is the emotionally charged Too Late To Lie, a soulful reflection on heartbreak, and Fry Plantain, an intimate and playful duet with Brooklyn-born rapper and actor Joey Bada$$ that pays tribute to one of Jamaica’s beloved comfort foods. Also featured is the critically acclaimed He Loves Us Both, a bold and beautifully layered collaboration with Grammy-winning R&B artist H.E.R., widely celebrated as one of 2024’s best songs.

Reggae’s Legacy

Lila Iké also honors reggae’s rich legacy while reimagining it through her own lens. All Over The World, featuring Protoje, is a vibrant salute to Jamaican music’s global reach, echoing the spirit of Rascalz’s 1990s hit Top Of The World that features the voice of Barrington Levy. Her sultry summer anthem Romantic, featuring dancehall luminary Masicka, revives Patra’s 1994 dancehall track Romantic Call with a fresh, modern twist. Meanwhile, Scatter channels spiritual resilience, drawing from Psalm 68:1 and sampling Peter Tosh’s Igziabeher (Let Jah Be Praised) alongside Garnett Silk’s Complain, weaving together roots and reverence in a powerful sonic tapestry.

Deeper Cuts

On the deeper cuts of Treasure Self Love, Lila Iké opens a window into her inner world, navigating themes of pain, vulnerability, and emotional rebirth. In All That And More, her collaboration with Maverick Sabre, soft, contemplative piano chords cradle a tender exchange of affirmations. The track unfolds like a healing ritual, with both voices rising into a choral swell of peace and encouragement. Serious pairs jazzy undertones with stark lyrical honesty, capturing the weight of mental turmoil—“Who feels it knows” becomes a mantra for those wrestling with unseen battles. Brighter Days shifts the mood, offering a vision of hope and resilience, a gentle reminder that light follows even the darkest moments. The album closer, Love In A Lovely Way, which weaves in Garnett Silk’s Place In Your Heart, honors love as a guiding, restorative force. Through these songs, Lila Iké channels personal hardship into lyrical introspection and emotional clarity, embodying the spirit of Treasure Self Love with grace and authenticity.
