Sister Nancy at ROTM 2025: “I sleep and dream about ‘Bam Bam’” (The Interview)
Thank you.
And thank you for doing this interview with Reggae-Vibes. It’s an honor. Nancy, the crowd—they couldn’t get enough of you. What did you think about the energy of the crowd, and did you full-joy your first performance at Reggae on the Mountain?
Of course I [did]. I always do when I perform. It’s all the same—always the same.
Sister Nancy, you’re a reggae icon—
Yes.
—you’re a unique, groundbreaking, living-legend.
Yes.
And it feels like lately, you’ve started to really “get your flowers” for this—as they say.
It’s like I just started.
Hundreds of people came out just last weekend in New York to watch this screening—
Yes—
—of this new documentary—
It’s right around the world now—everywhere.
And I can’t wait to see it. “Bam Bam: The Sister Nancy Story.” And last year, Sister Nancy, you were invited by the British Luxury brand Burberry to be a spokesmodel—
Yes, I modeled for them last year.
So, we’re just so happy as Sister Nancy fans—it’s just so awesome—
Yes.
—to see you recognized in such grand ways—
And I’m so grateful.
Does it help to dull, Sister Nancy, some of the sting of all those years like I know the documentary that’s come out talks about the loss of your royalties—
Yes, yes.
Does it help to dull the sting of that? All these things that have happened to you [recently]—the recognition.
Oh yes, it does. Everything happens for a good reason. And you know it’s good that I made that documentary. So everything—it’s just—it’s opening [other] doors. I’m comfortable and I’m happy. It only can get better [from here].
That’s right. Sister Nancy, there’s a very popular, respected selector, [Selecta Jerry], he plays your songs all the time. He’s the respected host of the Sounds of the Caribbean reggae radio show—it’s actually based in New Jersey.
And I live in New Jersey.
He’s a giant fan of yours just like me. And he wants to know: Did you know that there is a major league baseball player named Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies, and he uses your song “Bam Bam” each time he walks up to bat at the plate—
No.
—and that everyone watching TV hears your song—
I would like to thank him.
—and the Selecta wants to know should we feel good though as Sister Nancy fans that you are somehow getting royalties for when your song plays—
I get royalties as long as they use the song. And it’s even a ringtone.
Nice!
I do that voice.
And [Selecta Jerry] wants to know further—he knows someone at the Phillies—and he wants to know whether you would be interested if they contacted you to do a dub plate of that song—
Of course!
—for national TV?
Of course! Yes.
I will tell him that. Now, Sister Nancy, in 2021, The Financial Times—they wrote that “Bam Bam” is the most sampled reggae song of all time.
Yes.
