Burning Spear: A Living Legend in Full Flame
Though the tour hasn’t wrapped just yet, it’s safe to say Burning Spear’s 2025 European tour can be marked as nothing short of legendary. At a powerful 80 years young, Winston Rodney continues to radiate righteous fire, proving beyond doubt that his message and music remain as vital as ever.
On Sunday, June 29, Maastricht, the Netherlands, witnessed a moment for the history books. Never before has a reggae concert in that city drawn such a massive crowd. Over 500 devoted fans filled the main hall of the Muziekgieterij, traveling from near and far to be part of something extraordinary. Their energy buzzed with the anticipation of witnessing greatness.
While the sound quality at the beginning of Spear’s performance left something to be desired, it thankfully improved as the show went on, quickly overshadowed by the sheer magnetism of Spear’s presence. Backed by a razor-sharp band delivering roots riddims with precision, Spear held the audience in rapt attention. Though some lyrics were a bit hard to catch, the essence came through loud and clear: a call for unity, history, and spiritual uplift.
Clad in ripped jeans and a “Jamaica One Love” t-shirt, Burning Spear was the embodiment of enduring pan-African consciousness. For nearly two hours, he transformed the venue into a sanctuary of soul and sound, his voice carrying the wisdom of generations.
The setlist was a rich blend of deep songs and iconic anthems, Among the highlights were Door Peep Shall Not Enter and Rocking Time from his Studio One days, Man In The Hills, Jah No Dead, Slavery Days, Marcus Garvey, and the stirring closer African Postman.
A spiritual experience through and through, this night wasn’t just a concert. It was a celebration of roots music, Spear’s legacy, and the unwavering heartbeat of reggae.
