SAM COOKE
Cupid has to be one of the most famous songs by Sam Cooke, affectionately known as “the father of soul.” Released in May 1961, Cooke’s self-written song climbed to No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 20 on the Hot R&B Sides chart. Its strongest chart performance came in the UK, where it peaked at No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart. Over the years, Cupid has been reimagined by a range of popular artists, including Johnny Rivers, The Supremes, and Amy Winehouse. In 1969, American pop and reggae singer Johnny Nash introduced his own reggae-infused version of the song, which went on to reach No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 24, 1970.
