STING
English musician, activist, and actor Sting (real name Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner) rose to fame as the lead vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter for the band The Police, active from 1977 until their disbandment in 1986. He embarked on a solo career in 1985 with the critically acclaimed album The Dream of the Blue Turtles, featuring a string of hit singles that marked a bold departure from his band’s sound. In 1987, Sting followed up with the album Nothing Like The Sun, which included the poignant track Englishman In New York. The song pays homage to English raconteur and gay icon Quentin Crisp, who is the “Englishman” in the song’s title.
