
Sad news has reached the reggae community through a statement by his family. Renowned guitarist Radcliffe “Dougie” Bryan passed away peacefully in his sleep in Lauderhill, Florida, at around 2 AM on the morning of Thursday, October 16, 2025, following a period of illness. He was 78 years old. Widely regarded as one of the island’s most respected and versatile musicians, Bryan’s exceptional guitar work helped define the sound of reggae and contributed significantly to Jamaica’s global musical legacy.
A founder member of the vocal group The Sensations, he became better known as a session musician after joining the Maytals as Rad Bryan. Throughout his extensive career, Bryan performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in reggae, including Toots & The Maytals, Black Uhuru, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, Sizzla, and the legendary rhythm duo Sly & Robbie. His artistry also shaped the output of prominent studio ensembles such as The Aggrovators, The Revolutionaries, the Impact All Stars, Skin, Flesh & Bones, and the Oneness Band. His music can be heard across generations of classic and contemporary reggae recordings, many of which have influenced musicians worldwide.
In 2024, Bryan was honoured at the Back 2 Da Future Music Limited’s Grammy Certificate Ceremony in Florida, where he received multiple Grammy Certificates recognizing his contribution to several award-winning and nominated albums. Among the projects acknowledged were Black Uhuru’s Anthem, Crucial! Roots Classics by Bunny Wailer, Got to Be Tough and Light Your Light by Toots & The Maytals, Ska Father, Hanging Fire by Jimmy Cliff, and The Messiah by Sizzla. The recognition served as a fitting tribute to his lifelong dedication to the craft and his role in shaping the sound that carried Jamaican music across the world.
Radcliffe “Dougie” Bryan’s passing is indicative of the end of an era for Jamaican music. His technical mastery, rhythmic precision, and deep understanding of the art form made him a quiet architect behind many of reggae’s timeless hits. Loved and respected by peers and fans alike, his legacy will continue to live on through the countless recordings and performances that bear his distinctive touch.
