In 2015, Chronixx surprised listeners with the single News Carrying Dread, a collaboration with reggae band Inner Circle. This marked another milestone for Chronixx, the son of reggae artist Chronicle, whose musical journey began early. At fourteen, he recorded his first, unreleased track with Danny Browne in 2003. Undeterred, he spent the following years building his career, writing for other artists, founding a record label, and providing background vocals. His 2014 EP, Dread & Terrible, solidified his reputation, establishing him as a key figure in the “Reggae Revival” movement. Inner Circle, with a history stretching back to the late 1960s, achieved significant success in the 1970s with the charismatic Jacob Miller. Tragically, Miller’s death in a 1980 car accident disrupted the band’s trajectory, but they later reformed and continue to perform.

Chronixx’s 2015 single, News Carrying Dread, powerfully reimagines the 1975 hit Tenement Yard. This compelling track, available on a translucent green vinyl 7″ reissue from Buyreggae (2020), directly echoes the themes of Jacob Miller’s original, featured on the B-side. Miller’s lyrics vividly depict the anxieties of ghetto life, where dreadlocked individuals face constant surveillance and betrayal: Dreadlocks can’t smoke him pipe in peace, Too many informers and too many fears. Chronixx masterfully translates this sentiment with “news carryin dread,” highlighting the insidious presence of treachery within the Rastafarian community. Built around the original’s foundation, yet with a subtly altered tempo and seamlessly integrated samples of Miller’s voice, Chronixx’s rendition transcends a simple cover. It’s a transformative tribute, a new song that honors the raw intensity of Jacob Miller. Presented in a vibrant, full-color picture sleeve, this release is an essential addition to any reggae enthusiast’s collection.
