If anyone ever asks you just how outernational reggae is these days, it is worth your while referring them to this release – top-notch sounds from Hornsman Coyote, a Serbian trombonist, over impressive, heavyweight roots and dub riddims provided by House Of Riddim from their Austrian base. Coyote, or Nemanja Koji? to his family, also sings, but not on this set – strictly instrumental!

They have worked together in the past – on many occasions since around 2010 – but this reaches higher heights. Coyote draws on the recordings of people like Don Drummond (lend an ear to the tough-sounding Backstabber), Vin Gordon Jr, The Skatalites, maybe Augustus Pablo and especially Rico Rodriguez for this set. In Rico’s case, and particularly relevant for Madman Slide, remember his mid-seventies album Man From Wareika, a personal favourite that was ground-breaking and highly acclaimed at the time. I’m not about to claim that Coyote matches that, but then Coyote’s slide trombone licks consistently hit the spot, meaning that this release is certainly highly accomplished, totally listenable throughout, and deserves to be widely heard. It also helps, I guess, that its heart is in the right place and the inspirations are faultless.
