Hailing from Cologne, Germany, Los Apartamentos stands as the nation’s singular mento band, achieving notable success since their formation in 2016. Their musical lineage traces back to ska, with members previously contributing to bands like The Braces, Monkey Shop, and Kapelle 3. Driven by a desire to explore their musical roots, they discovered mento, prompting a shift to an acoustic ensemble with the ‘rumba box’ providing the rhythmic foundation. Though reminiscent of calypso, mento’s roots lie firmly in Jamaica, paving the way for ska and reggae. This genre captures the essence of everyday life with witty, often satirical lyrics, set to irresistibly catchy tunes that encourage immediate sing-alongs.

Presenting a double A-side 7″ single, Los Apartamentos share two mento traditionals. Mama Look A Booboo, on one side, is a Lord Melody song, well-known from Harry Belafonte’s 1957 version. The track explores a father’s humiliation at his children’s teasing, with Los Apartamentos offering a respectful and lively rendition. Flipping to the B-side, we encounter Hold ‘em Joe (My Donkey Want Water), a deceptively simple yet infectious tune.
