In 1973, at the tender age of five, Perry’s son Omar debuted as a recording artist alongside his sister Marsha, performing under the moniker The Children. The duo provided additional vocals for U Roy’s deejay track Yama – Khy. Fast forward fifty years, and Omar Perry, who has since released several full-length albums, continues to perform and record music. His newest album, the 9-track Channeling Lee “Scratch” Perry, stands as a heartfelt tribute to his iconic father, who passed away in August 2021.
In 2012, Lee Perry collaborated with the French duo Olivier Gangloff and Romain Ferrey of ERM (Easy Riddim Maker) to produce an album called Humanicity. This collection of ten tracks features sharp, vibrant riddims reminiscent of the sounds from the ’70s and ’80s. Following this project, ERM became Perry’s official backing band during his European tours, with Olivier Gangloff producing Scratch’s final studio album, Heaven, recorded shortly before Perry’s passing and released via Burning Sounds in 2023. Thus, it was only natural for musician and producer Olivier Gangloff to reach out to Omar Perry to join him in the creation of a tribute album. The rest, as they say, is history.
While listening to the diverse original tracks on this album, it becomes evident that Omar Perry, despite some subtle similarities, avoids imitating his legendary father, which is commendable. By remaining authentic to himself as an artist, he delves into the essence of Scratch’s music, aiming to rejuvenate its genuine spirit. Kicking things off is the slow-paced Time Boom, a captivating track that presents a big and beautiful sound reminiscent of Black Ark’s heyday. Very huge opening here. The next song, Wicked Back Deh, increases the pace, offering a different vibe while maintaining the same high quality as its predecessor. Following that is Magnetic Lights, a vibrant tune that may require multiple listens for full appreciation. The utterly enchanting Key To Your Heart stands apart from typical love songs, with lyrics open to various interpretations that enhance its appeal over the other romantic track included on this album, Lovers Paradise. The essence of Black Ark resurfaces as Pied Piper bursts from the speakers. Alongside the opener, this track reigns supreme on the album. With Wah See No Foe, Omar Perry presents a poignant tune that truly resonates. Similarly, the powerful message tune Weh Dem A Try along with the lovely sounding Garden Grow completes an album that deserves a listen.
