Now this is a lot of fun. Mento and ska meet reggae and dub, the latter courtesy of the great and legendary Scientist. It is certainly a good-time set from beginning to end.

Scientific was Hepcat’s second album, released in the mid-90s, following on from this Los Angeles, California based band’s first album Out Of Nowhere, which announced them as a rather fine traditionally based ska outfit with their roots definitely in the 60s sound – far more, and far more convincingly so, than the vast majority of their peers. The vocals – solo and harmony – horns, melodies, arrangements and sentiments are generally very much in this vein, with just the occasional forays into 70s reggae – either roots- or soul styled.

With such a title, it was not too long before the idea came of getting dub master Scientist to work his magic on the set, and Scientific Dub Special is of course the result. The band’s late vocalist Greg Lee was responsible for the idea and set up for Scientist’s involvement, approving the mixes only a couple of months before his untimely passing. There are a lot more vocals than is usual on a dub set, but it works well. Plenty of reverb and echo, though there is a mellow vibe throughout, and the four short Caribbean Tiger radio DJ interludes add to the atmosphere.

For some people, Scientific was one of the great Third Wave Of Ska albums; Scientist adds a somewhat different twist. Fans of Hepcat will love this, and those Scientist enthusiasts too – but don’t approach this expecting deep, deep dub, rather come to this for a feel-good vibe.
