Soul Revivers is a collaboration between Nick Manasseh and David Hill that came about after David was Creative and Music Consultant on Idris Elba’s film Yardie in 2017. There was music left over that was not used , and a year or so after the film appeared, David and Nick returned to it, eventually leading to the release of On The Grove; there has since been another album, Grove Dub and now this set, collecting together singles from the two men, with, as many may realise, an emphasis on the vibrant reggae scene in west London’s Notting Hill district (which includes Ladbroke Grove). It is no coincidence that this was released at the same time as the 60th anniversary of the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival took place.

Overall this is an excellent collection of roots reggae such as Johnnie Clarke’s take on The Good Book, classic lover’s rock with Sandra Cross’s A Thousand Years, instrumental reggae from the great trombonist Vin Gordon on Everything Is Everything, and just classy reggae from a classy singer like Susan Cadogan on No Place. That’s the first four tracks!

Others involved here, and all equally worth hearing are the veteran Earl Sixteen with the wonderful roots reggae of Serious Time, the reggae-jazz-world music fusion of Stable Way featuring trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey and trombonist Anoushka Nanguy,and both Sandra Cross and Johnnie Clarke return with a tougher-sounding Like A Lion over the rock solid rhythm and a distinctive Come Back To Me respectively. The moody, gentle title track featuring Ash Walker and Lyn Gerald makes for a striking and notable finish to a set that certainly provides some excellent, top-notch reggae, as well as food for thought.
