While ardent admirers of the genre may experience a moment of wistful anticipation, this album release does not constitute a reissue of the celebrated Jamaican vocal duo that rose to prominence during the ska era of the 1960s. Nevertheless, there is no cause for disappointment. Simply put the needle on the record, listen, and let this fun, feel-good album whisk you back to the heyday of ska, when Jamaica was jumping and the music was pure magic.
Who’s Patsy?
While reggae aficionados around the globe are well acquainted with Kingston-born Stranger Cole, the same can’t be said for Dutch female singer Patsy, known offstage as Renske De Boer. A dynamic presence in the Netherlands’ ska and reggae scene, Patsy has fronted bands like The Originators and seven-piece group Mr. Wallace, and lent her talents to genre-spanning projects including Undercover Sessions (Amy Winehouse) and the Jazz & Cocktail Sessions. Her collaboration with Boss Capone, the songwriter, producer, and key member of Dutch early reggae band The Upsessions, culminated in the 2023 LP Kings and Queens. The successful album showcased Patsy’s bold, commanding vocal style in a way that resonated with listeners and actually paved the way for the Royal album.
The Story
While heading to a festival gig in Europe a few years ago, Stranger Cole was relaxing on the tour bus when he asked what track was playing and who the singer was. The answer was “Kings and Queens by Patsy.” Stranger couldn’t help but chuckle as back in the early ’60s, he had recorded a string of hits with another Patsy: Milliecent ‘Patsy’ Todd. Yet, upon hearing the new Patsy’s voice, he was genuinely impressed and expressed a desire to collaborate. That wish came true, and fittingly, the fruits of their studio session are now released in celebration of the iconic Jamaican singer’s 83rd birthday.
A Royal Affair
Much like the successful Kings and Queens LP, the fittingly named Royal album showcases the expert production work of Boss Capone. Alongside the familiar single Dusty Brown, this 11-track collection unveils a fresh array of previously unreleased collaborations and solo performances. From start to finish, Boss Capone and his fellow musicians deliver a rich and immersive sonic journey that highlights their craftsmanship and musical cohesion. From the very first track it’s clear that everyone involved came in firing on all cylinders. The album kicks off with confidence and flair, setting the tone for a project that’s not afraid to showcase its strengths right from the start. The opening lot makes an immediate impression, beginning with the vibrant Bam! Festival, followed by the superb title track, and concluding with I Will Be A Queen, a song of sheer beauty. This stunning solo cut puts Patsy’s vocal skill and talent front and center, radiating grace, strength, and undeniable artistry. And it doesn’t stop here! The rest of the album continues to deliver a rich and well-rounded listening experience. Add to that a handful of standout moments such as the lively Hot Like Cooking Pot, All This Teasing, and Lonely Girl, and an impressive consistency across every track, and you’ve got an album that’s totally satisfying.
