Oh my! This is instrumental music that manages to be both hot and cool at the same time. Despite the album title, this is the debut set from this UK four-piece, formed initially by the rhythm section of drummer Sam Hobbs and bass player Neil Innes, and expanded by the addition of organist Bob Birch and guitarist Chris Dawkins.

All four members are vastly experienced musicians and Bob’s early years playing music by the likes of soul-jazz organ players Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff is certainly in evidence here. He is the lead instrumentalist throughout, and whilst the influence of the vintage sound of New Orleans funk kings The Meters is a major factor in their approach (listen to Bust Up), even more important is Jackie Mittoo, as the rhythms throughout are all hard reggae and revamped rocksteady; expect to hear echoes too of The Aggrovators and Winston Wright.

Bob apparently improvised his endlessly inventive lead lines in the studio, whilst Chris’s guitar work emphasises the rhythm but also add deft, subtle touches, and the rhythm section, as already noted, kicks along in fine style. Take a listen to the opening Night Bus – once you’ve caught it, you’ll definitely stay on until the end, and then like me, you may just go straight back to the beginning again.
