U Roy – I Can’t Lose
B Errol Brown – Rema Skank
This rocksteady double-sided gem showcases the talents of deejay Daddy U Roy, The Jamaicans, the exceptional sound of Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, and the expert mixing of sound engineer Errol Brown. The legendary U Roy made his mark at Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle studio in 1970 with three hits in the top three, including Wake The Town, Rule The Nation, and Wear You To The Ball. While he wasn’t the first Jamaican deejay to release records, he was the prime innovator of toasting over popular tunes. Among those was the poignant Things You Say You Love by The Jamaicans. That deejay cut is included in this 7″ reissue.
The dub version by Errol Brown, titled Rema Skank, is included on the B-side. After Duke Reid’s passing, producer Sonia Pottinger took over his Treasure Isle studio and catalogue. She brought on board sound engineer Errol Brown, whose exceptional mixing skills guaranteed the high standard of any reimaginings of Duke Reid’s works, as demonstrated by a trio of dub albums released in the mid-‘70s. Now, Rema Skank, originally featured on the 1976 album Pleasure Dub, is being issued as a 7″ single.
